Out on a Limb

Out on a Limb

I’m going out on a bit of a limb here today with my post. I guess I’m thinking if it works for Simon and Howard, maybe just telling how I see it and shooting straight from the hip, will work for me too.

I wonder what it says about us as human beings that two of the frontrunners on the highest paid celebrities of the year both have reputations for lacking compassion and empathy.

Simon Cowell and Howard Stern are two of the best-known celebrities who have built their empires on telling people what they view as brutal honesty, even at the risk of being rude, lewd and crude.

Yet both of these extremely successful, popular and wealthy celebrities are finding tremendous amounts of favor in the eyes of the public who seem not to be able to get enough of their telling people how it is, insulting and degrading or not.

I wonder if it has something to do with the yins to their yangs – when put onto a judging panel for American Idol with people like Paula Abdul (who is a wonderful dancer and choreographer in her own right – but way too mamby-pamby for my liking as a constructive judge of talent), or playing off someone like Howie Mandel, on America’s Got Talent, who finds some of the most ridiculous acts meeting his standards of talent – Howard and Simon truly do appear as the voices of reason, truth and honesty.

Somehow, these bad-boys of reality TV who speak their minds at the risk of crushing contestant’s hopes and dreams gain appeal and likeability because they seem more real than the other people on the panels.

Coming from a psychological point of view, these reality Kings are cashing in big time on relativity – this is to say that as compared to the other people they are next to, their direct, in-you-face approach is appealing and welcome.

Well, congrats Simon and Howard. Very few of us can say things as directly as you both do, and have hoards of people shower them with adoration and adorn them with jewels and gold. You seem to be onto something here!
