I had no idea! Me, a pet lover to rival all pet lovers, and I missed it. Well, technically, I am not sure you can miss something that you never were aware of in the first place, so let us just say, it passed me by without my knowing about it.

October 29 was National Cat Day. I had never even heard of it, but it seems it has been in existence since 2005 when Colleen Paige, determined to impact public awareness of the four million cats entering shelters annually.

Paige, an animal welfare advocate and pet lifestyle expert realized something had to be done about the overwhelming amount of cats ending up in shelters every year, especially after she found out that anywhere between one and two million of them end up having to be euthanized due to the lack of people adopting them and providing them with safe, good homes.

Now that I know about it, I vow not to miss it next year!

Her love of our furry feline friends has initiated a special, yearly day in which people are encouraged to visit their local animal shelter and devote a bit of their time with the cats there. Even if it doesn’t end up in adoption, just volunteering to clean out a cage or providing a bit of personal affection and attention to a cat will do the trick.

Pet Partners, a non-profit organization dedicated to providing therapy and companion animals to people and improve their health and happiness, certifies cats as well as dogs. Due to some of the purrsonality differences between cats and dogs, many times, cats go unnoticed or are devalued. But cats provide companionship and affection when coupled with a loving a caring owner too. Cats also can sense danger and warn people if it is approaching the ways dogs can.

The companionship and unconditional love offered by a cat is just as effective at lowering blood pressure and becoming a connection for youngsters and adults alike as that from a dog. And as many cat owners will tell you, the because they are lower maintenance than a dog that needs to be let out or taken out, they are purrrfect choice.

It is Paige’s goal that 10,000 shelter cats are adopted every October 29th in honor of National Cat Day. And if you’ve ever owned a cat, you will understand just how worthy of a goal that can be. Actually, Paige says it better herself.

“As humans, we need love…period.
In every heart…there is an empty space.
In every shelter, there is love…just waiting to fill it.”
