Dow at 18000

Something amazing occurred today! The Dow exceeded 18,000, the highest it has ever been. While the Dow soars, and unemployment drops and we watch our ‘strong’ American economy adding over 2.5 million jobs this year, you might think it’s time for us all to dance the happy dance, right? Not so fast!
According to a Sentier Research partner report, the average American household income has dropped by almost 5,000 inflation-adjusted dollars in the past seven years. In other words, the increased number of jobs aren’t offering salaries high enough to make ends meet. It is not anything new really. Many of us have lived through it before, but the difference is that we are being sold a bill of goods and not at a good price either.

Have you walked through the aisles of your local supermarket lately? More importantly, have you gone through the checkout lines and seen your total food costs soar through the roof while well-planned packaging is created to hide the smaller quantities of foods being sold? If you don’t know what I mean, try buying a pound of butter at your local grocery store. You won’t be able to because butter is no longer packaged and sold by the pound. The package contains only 15 ounces. And the more creative companies have even begun breaking the full 4 ounce sticks up into smaller parcels within the package so it isn’t as obvious any more.

How about ice cream? I remember buying and enjoying half-gallons of it. Not any more. It is 1.75 quarts in your package from the grocer. You may have seen the little tiny cans of coca cola and Pepsi, with the fancy marketing gimmick about how exciting it is to now be able to buy tiny cans. I’m not a soda drinker, but I know when I’m being treated as if I don’t see what is happening. Hunger in our country is on the rise. We are nearing 1 in every 7 people needing some type of help with food.

Hunger In America

And it isn’t as if I have a world of answers or options. But I hate the pretense. I feel as if it insults my intelligence to tell me how much better off I am when I see my monthly property taxes go up close to 30% this year or when I see more and more people really needing help with their basics such as heat and electricity and food, just in order to sustain themselves. If it were not for the charity of others, individuals and groups that are doing something about what is quickly becoming a runaway train, we might be seeing it clearer than we do, so thank goodness for them.

But if we look closely, we see it in the unrest on the streets. We see it with the protesting that is taking on a racial flavor when it is more about unrest and economic stressors that most of us don’t even know how to imagine living with. It most likely won’t be long before we are drawn into some type of international issue so as to keep the focus away from what is really happening and NOT happening here in this country the way it needs to. But before we can get there, we have to take a long hard look around us – at the truth and what is really going on outside our little corner in our own little neighborhood. We used to be the richest country in the world. So why are there so many people who can’t afford a Christmas ham or a Thanksgiving turkey for their family?

We are better than this. We can do better and we must.

  1. Been saying this for so long … Thank you for putting it out there. Even as a retiree with my big 1.7% Social Security increase, we retirees are also seeking other means of income, which they will take back in IRS tax!

People please: Fire all current government elected officials and start with a clean slate … one that is not already caught up in the crooked system of government, kickbacks, lobbyists, and special interests and assignments and posts. A group that won’t expect to live like kings and queens for the rest of their lives while we try to figure out how to feed our fat politicians ad infinitum.

Oh yes, also please demote them and lower their salaries, vacations, and impose term limits! Then we might get a governing body that comes in to get the job done, works for their employers (us), and then goes back to being everyday citizens like George Washington did.

    • Thanks so much for the comment and the ‘like.’

It may already be too late, but I agree entirely. If we all don’t make our voices heard loudly and clearly and SOON, we are done for sure!
